Democracy - that it is so rare to find it understood, to find the great heught & beauty, & practical fibre of American democracy understood (while it exists unconscious in the people), that I have can almost say I have not met three men in all my life that I have felt they understood it. And though it is humiliating to say so it is perhaps true that one noble Frenchman has ascended higher & understood the theoretical span better than any American we yet know. Le "noble Frenchman" à qui Whitman rend hommage est Alexis de Tocqueville, dont De la démocratie en Amérique parue en France en 1835-1840 avait été aussitôt traduite et publiée en anglais. Ce fragment autographe paraît être un brouillon de l'essai sur les mérites de la démocratie publié par Whitman à Washington en 1871 sous le titre: Democratic Vistas. Pour autant, cet hommage à Tocqueville par le héraut de la liberté du Nouveau Monde est amer; Whitman regrette que pas un seul de ses compatriotes n'ait encore mesuré ce que l'idéal démocratique américain implique.
