Rectangular box opening with a sliding lid, with a coniferous wood core covered with bas-relief carved bone plates. The sides of the perimeter are decorated in three registers of the same decoration: in the middle register, in between with lunar round-faced heads under arcades supported by twisted columns, small bashic scenes depicting, two by two, satyrs and other characters converse, walking on crutches or playing musical instruments, drinking and dancing; in the lower and upper registers, following the same lunar faces of the middle register, closing and opening their eyes alternately. The lid is decorated in the centre with three large plates: the one on the left shows Silenus' intoxication, leaning against a barrel surrounded by a satyr, two characters and a third crowned with leaves, arms crossed, standing on a pyre; the one on the right shows two satyrs musicians, one playing cymbals, the other blowing into a horn, two others attacking a goat, one holding its horns, the other riding it; the central plate shows two naked characters holding a shield in the shape of a cartouche fasce with three cinquefoils. These three scenes are framed by rosette-decorated chopsticks, themselves surrounded by a frieze of molded rhombuses connected by two twin rosettes and bordered by foliage. Finally, a last frieze forms the perimeter of the top with large elongated floral buds. (missing, including eight bone plates, also with wooden core, some vermoulures) Provenance: old collection of a family that has been living for a long time in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, near Chambéry (Savoie ) We know of several boxes of this type decorated with bone plates carved with small subjects depicting naked characters fighting, dancing, drinking, playing with animals, often subjects of a satyric or humorous nature; they are accompanied all around by different motifs, many of which are recurrent, such as rosettes, roses and diamonds.
