The Annunciation, a group of oak altarpieces carved in strong relief with minute traces of polychromy and gilding. On the left, the archangel is kneeling, holding in his right hand the messenger's staff (now disappeared); his hair is girded with a band that allows a cluster of curly locks falling into his neck to escape from the back; on the right, before a God-Prayer decorated with arcatures and covered with a cloth, Mary is also kneeling, her hands joined; oval face with drooping eyes, straight nose and small round chin; long strands of hair descending into her back; she is dressed in a coat and a simple dress with a neck highlighted by a sharp bulge; the draped coats of the angel and the Virgin break forming an accumulation of hollow and angular folds. In the upper register, above a balustrade covered with a sheet, six angels, four of whom we can see the busts, only two of whom are heads, adopt various attitudes, one with their hands joined in an attitude of adoration; semi-long hair with wavy strands ending mostly in snail-like loops. Northern Netherlands, Utrecht, attributed to Adrien van Wesel (Utrecht?, around 1417- † around 1490), around 1470/80 (minute accidents, especially on the wings of angels, fixing hole in the centre) Height: 41.5 cm - Width: 30.7 cm - Depth: 9.5 cm In this group with its rigorous composition, we recognize the very personal style of Adriaen van Wesel, called the Master of Musician Angels or the Master of the Death of the Virgin before his identification by Swillens in 1948. These two groups are kept at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (inv. N.M.11647 and 11859, fig. a and b), the only museum able to present a small number of sculptures attributed to this artist.
