Probably born in Milan around 1470, he and his brother Tiburzio were trained in the workshop of his father Giacomo Del Maino, a leading furniture manufacturer in Milan. He borrowed from his father an expressive and lively artistic language. In 1496, he and his father participated in the construction of the Crucifix of the church of Castel San Giovanni, which is still there today. A comparison between the works executed in collaboration with his father allows us to assign Giovanni an important group of stylistically homogeneous works such as the small relief of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London with the Virgin and Child between Saint Catherine and Saint Helena but also an important Crucifixion preserved in the same museum
