Large polychrome painted enamel plaque with gold highlights - Lot 65
Large polychrome painted enamel plaque with gold highlights representing Pentecost, salmon back enamel. In the centre, the Virgin, with her arms crossed on her chest, is surrounded by the apostles on an architectural background with pilasters and a curved window; the Dove of the Holy Spirit hovers above the scene in a radiant halo. Limoges, mid-16th century Height: 30.7 cm - Width: 18.3 cm (small enamel jumps on the edge and lower corners, cracks, gilding wear) By its size, this plaque was to belong to a large church altarpiece in the image of that of the Passion of Christ in the Basilica of Saint Hubert in Namur. The plates of this high altar, heavily damaged in 1568 by Huguenot soldiers, are indeed of similar dimensions, 30 cm x 20 cm (fig., Resurrection plate). They are by the same hand: similar chromaticism, strongly structured faces with a long straight nose, coats of characters adorned with gold flowers, some bordered with gold fillets, sowing stars in the background.
