Large polychrome painted enamel plaque with gold highlights - Lot 66
Large polychrome painted enamel plaque with gold highlights representing Christ in front of
Pilate after Albrecht Dürer's Little Passion (fig. a); dark salmon counter-enamel.
In an architectural setting with columns and arches, Pilate, the turbanned head, stands at the top of the steps; two soldiers bring Christ to the left while a priest, standing on the right, addresses him; a last character sits, leaning against a pedestal.
Limoges, mid-sixteenth century Height: 28.6 cm - Width: 19.7 cm
In a 17th century Spanish wooden frame carved with foliage, polychrome and gilded
(some accidents including some cooking accidents and some enamel jumps including a diagonal stripe)
Origin: Sale Paris, Hôtel Drouot, Me Binoche, 16 June 1993.
Private collection, Paris
Like the previous one, this plaque is to be attached to the workshop that made the great altarpiece of the Passion of Christ in the Basilica of Saint-Hubert in Namur.
Formerly attributed to Martin Didier, they are of the same hand with a similar chromaticism and similarity in the arrangement of gold flowers on the clothes such as here on those of the priest and Pilate. Although damaged, we note an identical plate containing the same composition of Dürer (fig. b).
