Dish said to the greyhound in copper red glazed earthenware - Lot 79
Dish said to the greyhound in copper red glazed earthenware decorated in its center with a dog. The animal, a heraldic greyhound recognizable by its ringed collar, rests on its long legs on the circle around it; the background is furnished with a vegetal decoration of stylised flowers and ears accompanied by diamond dots and cartouches; wing decorated with four large leaves; reverse side with concentric circles and zigzag friezes, in the centre, potter's mark of two intersecting Vs; two fixing
holes Spain, Catalan workshop, Reus, late 16th / early 17th century Diameter: 38 cm
(broken by the middle and glued back together, slight scratches on the edge)
The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon keeps in its collections two dishes presenting two variations on this animal theme surrounded by a plant seedling. This is very close to a model of the greyhound, Don Arconati-Visconti of 1916, attributed to a workshop in the city of Reus in Catalonia (inv. E.538-35, fig. a). We also find the same stylized ears on another dish, also originating from Reus, whose reverse bears the mark of potter with intersecting V's that we observe on several dishes of this production (inv. H 1770, fig. b and b'). The art of chandelier was probably introduced in Catalonia by Valencian potters in the middle of the 15th century. Many archival documents attest to a real industrial production in Reus between 1535 and 1650:
