(some restorations and accidents)
This impressive Saint Anne is to be linked to the statuary between Gothic and Baroque from southern Germany. It seems that this region particularly appreciated the theme of the mother educator by giving a late figuration, standing, carrying the Child Jesus on one of her arms, sketching a gesture of protection towards Mary, also standing beside her. For example, a 158 cm long Trinitarian Saint Anne signed by a certain Veit Lang and dated 1622 can be seen at the Museum of Sacred Art and Liturgy in Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg (fig. a). Another example, attributed to Christoph Rodt's entourage around 1630/40, height 95 cm, is preserved at the Wettenhausen Cloister in Bavaria (fig. b). Unfortunately, little is known about these two sculptors: the first, of which only two signed works are known, it seems that he worked in Bavaria but also in the region of Lake Constance, the second, his activity is essentially documented in Bavaria also in the surroundings of the Zürn family. Martin Zürn (1585-1665) is the author of a great Saint Anne Trinitaire, dated 1631, visible in the parish church of Saint Martin in Aulendorf near Ravensburg.
It is likely, however, that these great Saint Anne's were commissioned by women's congregations and demonstrated the role of these communities as educators for young girls. The inscription on the book held by Mary
