DENYS CALVAERT (ANVERS ? CIRCA 1540 - BOLOGNE 1619)
Galatea Black stone and wash on paper laminated in full (insulated; accidents). H_18.7 cm L_12.6 cm Provenance: - former Nicholas Lanier collection (1588-1666), stamp on the back (L. 2886) - former Richard Cosway collection (1742-1821), stamp on the back (L. 628) - probably, posthumous sale "The Cosway Collection", Stanley 14-22 February 1822, lot 1351 ("Galatea, in chalk", in the "Raphael's Drawings" list) - private collection, Paris. Already settled in Bologna, Denys Calvaert spent a few years in Rome from 1572. In the life of the Flemish painter (Felsina Pittrice, 1678), Carlo Cesare Malvasia reminds us of the drawings he had made after Raphael's frescoes in the Villa Farnesina, then owned by the Chigi family. According to Malvasia, Calvaert became the great draughtsman he was thanks also to this learning from the works of the artist from Urbino. Representing the central character of Raphael's magnificent fresco The Triumph of Galatea (1513) on the ground floor of the villa, our drawing is obviously part of Calvaert's studies of nature around 1572. We thank Mr Michele Danieli for confirming the authenticity of this drawing on the basis of the photograph.
