Of Flemish origin, Jean Michel Picart spent most of his career as a still-life painter in Paris, where he settled in 1630, and was received at the Académie de Saint-Luc in 1640, where his compositions were initially characterized by sobriety. He then painted in a more abundant style, close to the Baroque, which heralded the evolution of still life under Louis XIV, accumulating objects and the effects of draperies. Picart was considered the most important painter in his field until Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer. Louis XIV had many paintings in his hand. It seems he was also an art dealer and expert
