CHRIST IN CROSS accompanied by Marie-Madeleine... - Lot 188 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
CHRIST IN CROSS accompanied by Marie-Madeleine in wood carved in strong relief and gilded on a panel background painted in black in a frame molded with protrusions. On a tall slender cross, Christ living with an exhaling mouth, head lying on his right shoulder, V-arm, slightly arched body with asymmetrical legs, perizonium draped around the hips, held by a double cord and leaving the right leg uncovered; beautiful crumpled accident with flight from one end. To the left of the cross, Mary Magdalene, kneeling on a terrace decorated with a frieze of ovum, wipes her larvae with a piece of her coat; to the right, a weeping angel, holding a skull in one of her hands, presses her cheek against her hand in a gesture of affliction; a snake wraps her body at the foot of the stipe. Surroundings of François Girardon (1628-1715), late 17th - early 18th century (two fingers of Christ's right hand broken and glued back together, probably missing a nimbus behind Christ's head).
