A large glass GOBELET engraved with a wheel... - Lot 191 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
A large glass GOBELET engraved with a wheel decorated, on one side, with a sword duel between a man on foot and a horseman and, on the other, with a castle on a wooded hill. St. Petersburg, 18th century. H_12.4 cm D_9.6 cm This glass work and the themes represented are comparable to cups kept in the Ceramics Museum at Kuskovo Castle near Moscow. In the 1740s, glass engraving already occupied a fairly important place in the products of merchant manufacturers and reached its peak in the private factories of the Nemchinovs and Maltzovs. During the first quarter of the 18th century, the Russian government supported this production and although St. Petersburg continued to be a major trading centre, new private industries were created in and around Moscow in the 1730s to imitate the production of engraved glasses and cups from the former capital.
