MAHAL SAROUK CARPET (cotton warp and weft,... - Lot 303 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
MAHAL SAROUK CARPET (cotton warp and weft, wool velvet), Central Persia, circa 1920 H_146 cm L_110 cm The Mahal appellation applies to carpets in the central Persian region. Mahal carpets are well cared for both in technique and design: they are finely knotted with good quality wool, varied colours (blue, red, ochre...), a short shave that gives the designs a shine. The carpets are decorated with medallions or bouquets of flowers (as in Sarouk carpets), or with repetitive ornaments identical to those of Ferrahan carpets. The carpet is enhanced with an elegant stylized floral decoration on a red background. A navy blue border with a garland of flowers is framed by two contraborders (worn, frayed and damaged edges).
