« According to this book, Ordoñez spent about thirty years (1567-97) knocking about the world. Most students of his work believe that he was indeed in Spanish Americ, and perhaps in the Philippines. Much more scepticism exists over the authenticity of his professed travels in Asia. He claims in his prologue to have visited ?all five parts of the world'. But some of his materials on Asia he clearly gathered from the letters of the Jesuit Nicolas Pimenta (1546-1614), for he reproduces extracts from them. Included in his itinerary are visits in 1590, one of the few precise dates given in the book, to Nagasaki, Canton, and Macao. From China he went to Cochin-China where he allegedly remained for four years (...). Ordoñez proceeded from Indochina back to Spain by way of Malacca, Goa, and the Cape of Good Hope. In 1597 he arrived at Jaen, the town of his birth in southern Spain » (Lach & Van Kley, Asia in the Making of Europe, III, p. 325). Bel exemplaire.
