New British Atlas, being a complete set of Country-Maps, on which are delineated all the Roads, Cities, Towns, Villages, Rivers & Canals. Together with correct general maps of England, Wales, Scotland & Ireland. London, John Stockdale, 1805. In-folio (570 x 465 mm), an engraved title and 51 cards (including the supplement for the North Riding card) mostly partially colored; half calf with corners, smooth back, modern blue morocco box (modern imitation binding). Precious volume from Napoleon's library on St. Helena, with the wet stamp and the mention "Emperor Napoleon" by Louis-Joseph Marchand on the title page. Merchant was the emperor's first chambermaid and executor. He entered the imperial service in 1811 as an apartment boy and followed Napoleon during his exile on St. Helena. The engraver John Cary acquired a reputation as a remarkable cartographer. His New British Atlas was published in 1805, the year the Third Coalition (United Kingdom, Empire of Austria, Empire of Russia) was formed against France.
