PHILIPS, John.
Secret history of the reigns of Kings Charles II and Jaques II. Translated from English. Cologne, Pierre Marteau, 1690. 366 pp. In-12 (123 x 67 mm), 1 f.n.ch. (errata); havana morocco, triple gilded net in the frame of the dishes, central piece with small irons composed of four fleurons, flanked by two crowned lions, two suns including the one in chief surmounted by the royal crown, corner fleurons, back with nerves, gilded cases and covered alternately with red morocco pieces, red morocco lining, set with a wide lace composed of small irons including the crowned sun, golden slices on marbling (binding attributed to Luc-Antoine Boyet). Quentin-Bauchart, I, 269 sq. m. First edition of the French translation, but we do not know of any edition in English. The Secret History of the Reigns of Kings Charles II and James II is a response to the libellus entitled True Portrait of William Henry of Nassau published the same year by the great Arnauld. It was at the end of 1688 that William III of Orange landed in England and took power, while King James II fled and took refuge with his cousin Louis XIV who welcomed him to France where he lived in exile until his death. Very beautiful copy covered with a luxurious binding that tradition has long attributed to Madame de Maintenon but whose signature Duvivier, which can be found on the title, now confirms that these bindings, called "archaic", were made for a group of distinguished collectors, including Jérôme Crespin du Vivier dit Duvivier. This precious volume later entered the library of La Malmaison and one can think that the historical interest of the work, concerning among other things the conquest of England by William of Orange, did not fail to touch the emperor's attention. Uniformly browned paper. Provenance: Duvivier - Bibliothèque de La Malmaison (stamp on the title) - Hans Fürstenberg (ex-libris).
