THIÉBAULT, Dieudonné.
My memories of twenty years in Berlin; or Frederick the Great, his Family, his Court, his Government, his Academy, his Schools, and his Literary and Philosophical Friends. Paris, F. Buisson, 1804. 5 volumes in-8; rooted fawn calf, smooth backs decorated with geometric squared fleurons, title and tomaison pieces (in shield) of red morocco, chain and rattooth framed on the plates, imperial arms struck in the centre, mention "Malmaison" in golden letters on the upper plates, dotted on the cups, yellow edges (period binding). Quérard, IX, 420; Monglond, VI, 938-939. Original edition. Dieudonné Thiebault stayed in Berlin from 1765 to 1784 where he won the trust of Frederick II, who entrusted him with the proofreading and correction of his writings and the task of having them published. These Memories are one of the most reliable and lively political and cultural testimonies to Berlin's life under Frederick II. The last volume evokes the literary friends and philosophers of the enlightened monarch: Voltaire, Maupertuis, the Marquis d'Argens, the abbot of Prades, La Métherie... The author was the father of Paul-Charles-François-Dieudonné Thiébault (1769-1846), General of the Empire, "the worst language in the army" (Jean Tulard). Freckles in the margin of the last leaves of volumes I and III; restored bindings. A precious copy with the arms of Napoleon I, from the Emperor's library and Empress Josephine's library at Malmaison.
