XENOPHON.
Scripta in usum lectorum Graecis litteris tinctorum commentariis ad rerum et verborum intelligentiam illustrata a Benjamin Weiske. Leipzig, Caspar Fritsch, 1797-1804. 6 volumes in-8; marbled calf, imperial coat of arms in the centre of the dishes and framed by a gilded castor; back decorated with a double number N crowned in the entre-nerfs; title and tomaison piece in red morocco, marbled edges (period binding). Brunet, V, 1491 ("estimated edition"). Important Latin edition of Xenophon's works translated and commented by Benjamin Weiske who taught at the famous Pforta College in Saxony-Anhalt. The 6 volumes have been elegantly bound and bear on the plates and backs the coat of arms and the emperor's number. A frontispiece portrait engraved by Geyser after Barbier. Last notebook of the flight. IV inverted, text uniformly yellowed; bindings very slightly rubbed, small snag on the cap of Volume I. Otherwise very good copy. [Attached:] PLUTARQUE. The French Plutarch, the lives of France's illustrious men and women from the fifth century to the present day, with their full-length portraits engraved on steel. Second edition, published under the direction of M. T. Hadot. Paris, Béthune et Plon printing house for Langlois and Leclercq, 1844-1847. 6 volumes in-8; eggplant demichagrin, smooth back decorated with a gilded and cold rockery decoration; gilded edges (period binding). Vicar, VI, 732-733. Very clean copy and kept in its decorative binding of the time. It contains only 179 portraits engraved in colour, and enhanced with Arabic gum out of the 181 required (2 portraits of the emperor are missing, including Napoleon in 1812 in Volume VI). Napoleon Foundation dry stamp at the bottom of each title and flying library label.
