Adèle de Montmorency, or La Belle émigrée,... - Lot 21 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Adèle de Montmorency, or La Belle émigrée, a true story. By J.L.C.******. Paris, chez Marchand, 1800-1801. 2 parts in 1 volume in-12 (158 x 94 mm) of an engraved frontispiece, VIII, 204 pp. for part I; one engraved frontispiece, 1 f.n.ch. (title), 210 pp. for Part II; half-basane, smooth back decorated (period binding) Original edition. This erotic novel, recounting the licentious adventures of the young Adèle de Montmorency, is illustrated with two charming frontispieces engraved by Binet, the illustrator of the works of Restif de la Bretonne. It could be from his pen. A motto completes the title pages: "In the republics love is counted for nothing, young people still have chivalry, women coquetry, libertines passion, sensitive hearts tenderness". The book is not cited in any bibliography consulted (Gay-Lemonnyer, Pia, Babier, Rives-Childs, etc.) and the BnF electronic catalogue does not describe any copies. Only the Karlsruhe electronic catalogue locates 3 institutional copies (Bonn, Munich, and Greiz). Rare freckles, pp. 163/64 (part II) with tearing without lack; blunt corners, back of the binding formerly restored and with lack.
