[BECKFORD, William].
Vathek. London, Clarke's,[1815]. In-8 (193 x 131 mm) of a frontispiece and an engraved title, a f.n.ch., 218 pp.; semi-percaline plum, smooth back (binding towards the end of the 19th century). Third edition in French, known as "definitive". In the introductory leaflet Beckford explains why this new edition came into being: "As the Paris and Lausanne editions have become extremely rare, I have finally consented to the republication in London of this small book as I have composed it... I have prepared a few episodes; they are indicated on page 200 as a follow-up to Vathek - perhaps they will appear one day. June 1, 1815". Beckford had first published his text in French in Lausanne at Isaac Hignou's in December 1786, with the vintage 1787, and that same year a second edition, revised by Lausanne doctor and writer François Verdeil, and Louis-Sébastien Mercier, appeared in Paris at Poinçot (see previous issue). The frontispiece is engraved by Isaac Taylor, the engraved title is adorned with a fantastic vignette showing Vathek's eye surmounted by a turban. Freckles, without the errata sheet.
