CHAR (R.) & ZAO WOU-KI
The Companions in the garden. Poems (1955-1956). Paris, Typographie Imprimerie Union[Louis Broder], 1957. Small in-8° square, in sheets, printed cover, folder and publisher's case. Partly original edition illustrated with 4 original drypoints and aquatints in colours by Zao Wou-Ki. A copy offered by the poet to Marie-Louise Roux (1935-2010), known as a mimi: "For mimi, a perpetual star of joy. René Char Monday, May 26, 1958." It was in 1937 in the Provençal village of Céreste that the poet met the four Roux brothers, and this meeting gave rise to a strong and lasting friendship with this group of intellectuals with a sincere political commitment. Under the occupation, when René Char decided in 1942 to go underground and join the Secret Army under the name of Captain Alexander, it was in the maquis of Céreste that he established his resistance network, thus becoming an intimate member of the Roux family. Marie-Louise, daughter of one of the four brothers, was only seven years old during this dark period of history. René Char, twenty-eight years his senior, became attached to this little mimi, a symbol of freshness and hope for a better future. This relationship continued after the war, with the poet even interceding in his favour in 1954 for his enrolment at the Paris Faculty of Medicine. For her, René Char reserved brochures published by his publisher friend Pierre André Benoit, and at the same time he regularly sent her his latest publications, always accompanied by tender dedications. One of the 15 copies numbered in Roman numerals. Limited edition of 130 copies, all printed on Rives vellum and signed by Char and Zao. Perfect example. Origin: Marie-Louise Roux (sent).
