Original edition of the rare Naumbourg preface published just before the edition given by Charpentier in 1863. A novel of a flamboyant cloak and sword, Captain Fracasse, whose story takes place during the reign of Louis XIII, is a pastiche of Scarron's Comic Novel. "[Théophile Gautier] here drew and coloured a beautiful series of Louis XIII prints, as he had sought to make a collection of exquisite paintings from the late seventeenth century in Mademoiselle de Maupin" (Laffont-Bompiani).
