LA MOTTE-FOUQUET, Friedrich.
Ondine, tale, translated from German by Mme la Bne. de Montolieu. Paris, Arthus Bertrand, 1818. In-12 (162 x 97 mm) of an engraved frontispiece, 2 ff.n.ch., XXXII, 294 pp., 2 ff.n.ch.; Brown half-basin, smooth back (period binding). Original edition of the French translation. A free adaptation of Paracelsus' Liber de Nymphis, Ondine is a tale in which the female genius of the waters seeks, by marrying the knight Huldebrand, to acquire the soul of which she is deprived. The original German edition published in 1811 was quickly adapted for the theatre with music by Hoffmann. In 1938 Jean Anouilh wrote a new adaptation. The play will be directed by Louis Jouvet, with Madeleine Ozeray in the title role and will be a resounding success. Very good copy. Origin: ex-libris Pontchartrin.
