MATURIN, Charles Robert.
Bertram, or The Castle of St. Aldobrand, a tragedy in five acts. Translated freely from English by Messrs Taylor and Ch. Nodier. Paris, Gide fils & Ladvocat, 1821. In-8 of 2 ff.n.ch., XI, 178 pp., 1 f.n.ch.; half blue calf, printed cover preserved (Laurenchet). Bound, 339. Original edition of the translation. "Charles Nodier with his pronounced taste for fantasy in the preface that precedes this tragedy whose action takes place in Sicily says that it is horribly beautiful and that it is horribly moral because one cannot complain that the crime does not receive its punishment there. This preface must be part of the series of important manifests that followed" (Loliée). Trace of wetness on the foot, doubled cover and with small holes. Origin: ex-libris Ernest Hivert.
