NODIER, Charles &. BERARD
Cyprien Lord Ruthwen, or The Vampires. Novel by C. B. published by the author of Jean Sbogard and Thérèse Aubert. Paris, Fain pour Ladvocat printing house, 1820. 2 volumes in-12 (180 x 108 mm) of 2 ff.n.ch., IV, 208 pp. for volume I; 2 ff.n.ch., 194 pp. for volume II; paperback, original printed cover. Lolliée, Catalogue des Romans Noirs, 415. Original edition, very rare. First edition in French of the Polidori Vampires. This rewrite, by Cyprien Bérard, was published by Charles Nodier who wrote a foreword for the edition entitled Observations préliminaires which he placed at the head of the first volume. He points out the popularity that the vampire had conquered at the end of the 18th century: "the frightening fable of the vampires could not fail to be consecrated among all the nations that received it in their belief... I have no doubt that the public, like me, does not give another kind of merit more rare and more valuable to this novel...". "...France therefore lacked a literary production on vampires!...Berard's work comes at the right time...It is by far the most interesting text that the first generation of French Romantics wrote." (Florent Montaclair, in: Le vampire dans la littérature française 1820-1868, p. 109). Very nice copy, well preserved, entirely uncut, slightly broken back. Stamp Donaueschingen on the back of the titles.
