PLATON. [CONVIVIUM]
Plato's Banquet betraying love & beauty, with argumens on each prayer, summarily deducted. The most notable & best awards collected from all the works of this Plato. All in French by Mr. Heret. Paris, printed by A. Briere for Guillaume Guillard, 1556. In-4 (217 x 150 mm) of 4 ff.n.ch., 188 pp., 2 ff.n.ch. (including the last white one); soft vellum, smooth back (contemporary binding). BM, French, 354. Missing from Adams Original edition of Mathurin Heret's French translation (1518- after 1584). The Banquet is a Platonic dialogue, written around 380 BC. There are some myths about love and eroticism, including Aristophanes' account of the three original human sexes. Extremely rare, this edition is missing from the USTC, the Karlsruhe electronic catalogue only locates four institutional copies in Europe (Toulouse Library; BCU Lausanne; Danish National Library; British Library). A small trace of wetness at first, if not a fine example in its first binding.
