ZOLA, Emile.
Ed. Manet. Biographical and critical study. Paris, E. Dentu, 1867. In-8 (237 x 157 mm) of 48 pp., 2 engraved plates; paperback, original printed cover. Original edition. Rare printed brochure for the Retrospective Exhibition organized by Manet in a pavilion built at his own expense at the Alma, on the fringes of the 1867 Universal Exhibition and Exhibition from which he had been excluded: "I hope that it will set fire to the powders", the artist said in the first monograph dedicated to him. It is not only a critical study divided into three parts: Man and the Artist, Works, Public but a dazzling "defense and illustration" of Manet's art: "I don't think it is possible to obtain a more powerful effect with less complicated means. The illustration includes a portrait of the artist engraved by Bracquemond, on the frontispiece, and an original etching from Manet's Olympia. This engraving of the Olympia painting, which Zola had described as the painter's "masterpiece", testifies to their friendship and their joint work for the success of this retrospective, which was nevertheless a complete failure. (Harris, Édouard Manet, The Graphic work, 1990, no. 53). Broken back, cover with small gaps; small spot on the edge of the last 10 sheets. ZOLA: See also ¶s 19 and 20.
