Large in-4 (378 x 280 mm). 1 f. bl., 1 f. title in red and black, 4 pp. for the poem, 1 plate engraved in relief before inking, 1 f. justification, 8 etchings in colour, and 1 f. bl.: Beige box, large mosaic composition of blue and black box with in the centre a circular piece of red box, smooth back, black letters, grey box guards. Gilded slices on witness. Ivory vellum covers and back preserved. Triple binding signed by Pierre-Lucien Martin, dated 1963. Werner Spies, Helmut R. Leppien. Max Ernst, Dos Graphische Werk. Menil Foundation, Houston Texas. Cologne: 1975, No. 56. Original edition and first edition at 33 numbered copies on Arches vellum of these 8 original etchings in colour. Each of the plates is numbered and signed with lead pencil by the artist. Exceptional exemplary enriched with 3 additional test or study etchings, all signed by the artist at the lead mine: a test sheet enhanced with collage pieces, numbered "test ¼" and signed with lead pencil; a test sheet enhanced with watercolour and annotated in pink ink by the artist, numbered "test 1/1" and signed with lead pencil and a rejected sheet annotated with black ink, numbered "test 1/1" and signed with lead pencil. The copy also includes Max Ersnt's poem "Hirondil Hirondil Hirondelle" with a reproduction of a drawing by the artist and the article "Max Ernst, "bird of a higher species"" by K.-A. Jelenski, published in the journal Evidence dated November 1959.
