Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)
Tarasque, 1954 Zoomorphic ceramic pitcher painted partially glazed and decorated with engobe. Red, black, white and grey patina. Brush inscription: "Edition Picasso" below. Edition of 50 numbered copies. Painted faience pitcher with engraving; from an edition of 50 numbered. Inscription "Edition Picasso" stamp engraved under the piece. H_35,5 cm W_30,5 cm The tarasque is a monster of the Provencal folklore, which, according to the legend, terrorized the inhabitants of Tarascon. Here is what Jacques de Voragine wrote about it in the 13th century: "There was, at that time, on the banks of the Rhone, in a marsh between Arles and Avignon, a dragon, half animal, half fish, thicker than an ox, longer than a horse, with teeth like swords and as big as horns; he hid in the river from which he took the life of all the passers-by and submerged the ships. "The tarasque is one of Pablo Picasso's rarest ceramics, only 50 of which have been made. Each copy differs slightly from the others, mainly because of the white brushstrokes in the lower part. The same applies to the figures in the upper part. Provenance: - Estate of Pablo Picasso - Private collection Bibliography: Catalogue Ramié reproduced under no. 722
