Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)
Vase with black engraved face, December 24, 1953. Terracotta clay, engobe decoration. Edition of 100 numbered copies. Brush inscription under the base: "Edition Picasso, Madoura". Terra cotta decorated; from an edition of 100 numbered. Inscription "Edition Picasso Madoura" stamp engraved under the piece. H_35,5 cm W_20,5 cm This vase, magnificent of sobriety, is the only ceramic of Pablo Picasso that does not offer a painted decoration. The motif is simply engraved on a black background: two faces that are significantly different. The first one, more refined, has a nose extended by the eyebrow arches drawn in a single line, two round eyes and a small mouth. The second, inside a closed circle, a straight nose and two pleated eyes topped by eyebrows. If it would be exaggerated to speak of Janus, these two faces nevertheless offer very distinct physiognomies. Provenance: - Estate of Pablo Picasso - Private collection Bibliography: Catalogue Ramié reproduced under no. 210
