Jean Dubuffet The works of Art Brut are created by self-taught creators, marginalized people entrenched in a position of rebellious spirit or impervious to collective norms and values, who create without worrying about public criticism or the gaze of others. Without the need for recognition or approval, they design a universe for their own use. Their works, which are produced using generally new means and materials, are free from influences from the artistic tradition and apply singular modes of figuration. The French painter Jean Dubuffet is responsible for the concept of Art Brut. As early as 1945, he built up a collection of objects created by psychiatric hospital inmates, prisoners, originals, loners or reprobates. In this marginal creation, he perceives a "pure, raw artistic operation, reinvented in all its phases by its author, based solely on his own impulses". The notion of Art Brut is thus based on social characteristics and aesthetic particularities.
