(title), 452 pp., 1 f.n.ch.; red morocco, dishes richly decorated with small irons, decorated spine with nerves, roulette on the cups, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Very beautiful small-format edition of the works of Sieur de Balzac (1595-1654), nicknamed "the restorer of the French language". "Following the example of Seneca, the Fathers of the Church, etc.". Balzac addresses to his friends, under the name of 'letters', small essays, in a very neat style, on great subjects of morality or philosophy. All of learned Europe was honoured to receive them, and Ménage tells us that a volume of Balzac's Letters was the most pleasant gift that a gallant could give to his mistress" (Grente).
