Vernet; fawn calf, gilt floral roulette wheel framing the plates, decoration with crossbars on the plates, smooth spine, boxes decorated with a special dove iron, gilt edges (contemporary binding by Rosa with her label on the back cover). Separate original edition of Bernardin de Saint Pierre's masterpiece, published one year after the first publication of the text in the fourth volume of Études de la nature. "This was the last triumph of romance literature in the 18th century, unleashing an enthusiasm that hardly waned in the following century" (Jacques Quentin, In French in the text).
