Novum Testamentum, haud poenitendis sacrorum Doctorum scholiis, Ioannis Benedicti... concinnatis. Paris, Simon de Colines, 1543. In-8 (175 x 110 mm) de 20 ff.n.ch., 183 ff.ch., 1 feuillette blanc, 140 ff.ch., 8 ff.n.ch. (index); olive morocco, richly decorated dishes with fanfare decoration, central medallion left blank, spine ribbed, decoration on the cups, gilt edges, without laces (binding ca. 1580). First separate edition of the New Testament with commentaries by Jean Benoît, taken from the folio edition of 1541, also printed by Simon de Colines. All editions given by John Benedict were indexed by the Catholic Church. "Johannes Benedictus (John Benedict 1484-1573)... like Robert Estienne, attempted to produce a more accurate text of the bible. In preparing the text Benoît consulted most of the then known Hebrew and Greek manuscripts, as well as the printed editions of the bible" (Schreiber). "The editions of Benedictus were eventually placed on the 'Index Expurgatorius'" (Darlow-Moule, for the 1541 edition of the bible). A fine, well-preserved, ruled copy in a beautiful fanfare binding made by an anonymous Parisian workshop. Renouard (Colines), 381; Schreiber (Colines), no. 200; Adams, B-1732; missing from Darlow-Moule.
