BOSSUET, Jacques Bénigne.
Exhibition of the doctrine of the Catholic Church on matters of controversy. Twelfth edition. Paris, Sébastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1686. In-12 (142 x 82 mm) of 188 pp., 2 ff.n.ch., 214 pp., 1 ff.n.ch.; black morocco, triple gilt fillet framing, arms at the corners and in the middle of the plates of Baron Longepierre, spine ribbed, boxes decorated with the same iron, roulette on the cups, gilt edges (contemporary binding attributed to LucAntoine Boyet). This work, essential in Bossuet's work, was composed with the aim of bringing Turenne back to the Catholic faith, and he succeeded. It is the best, clearest and most precise exposition of the doctrine as defined by the Council of Trent. A fine copy whose binding can be attributed to Luc-Antoine Boyet, appointed bookbinder to the king in 1698, one of the craftsmen who regularly worked for the bibliophile baron. "The bindings of the Longepierre library enjoy the same credit among enthusiasts as those advertising the books of Grolier, the president of Thou and the Count of Hoym. They are generally of great perfection in their simplicity, and this library of an admirable choice, not appearing to have ever been very extensive, they very rarely appear in sales" (Charles Nodier, preface to the Pixéricourt catalogue). Provenance: Baron de Longepierre (binding with his weapon parts) - Charles Nodier (ex-libris, described under number 30 of his library catalogue) - J.F. Payne (signature on the guard dated 1850, sale of his library in 1857, lot 16). The binding does not bear the arms of Baron Longepierre but of a contemporary English bibliophile, Martin Folkes (1690-1754) who used the same emblems of the Golden Fleece for his bindings.
