Heath after Joshua Reynolds, XII pp., 8 ff.n.ch., 516 pp. for volume I; 1 f.n.ch., 588 pp., 2 engraved plates for volume II; half calf, smooth spine (contemporary English binding). First edition, second edition, with the word 'give' on page 135, line 10, of volume I. The Life of Samuel Johnson is the most famous biography in the English language. It was an immediate success and has been reprinted regularly to the present day. A complete copy of the engraved portrait after Reynolds and of the two plates (Rond Robin, and the facsimile of Johnson's handwriting). The white leaf a1 of the volume has been removed by the bookbinder. Copy with all margins. Partially split jaws, slightly blunt corners, discreet restorations. Provenance: Barton Currie (ex-libris).
