[BOYER D'ARGENS, Jean-Baptiste ?].
Thérèse philosopher, or Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire de D. Dirrag, & de mademoiselle Eradice. New edition, with a greater number of figures than all the previous ones. London, [Cazin], 1785. 2 volumes in-18 (123 x 74 mm) of 161 pp., 9 engraved plates including the frontispiece for volume I; 2 ff.n.ch., 80 pp., 11 engraved plates for volume II; rooted basane, double gilt fillet framing, smooth spine decorated, roulette on the cuts, gilt edges (contemporary binding). A classic of clandestine erotic literature: Thérèse philosopher. First published in 1748, this libertine novel is attributed to Jean-Baptiste de Boyer, Marquis d'Argens (1703-1771); and it is another great libertine, the Marquis de Sade, who in his Histoire de Juliette describes it as "a charming work, the only one that has shown the purpose, the only one that has pleasantly linked lust and impiety, and that will finally give the idea of an immoral book". Cohen considered this edition of Cazin to be "the prettiest". The 20 free plates (9 for the first volume and 11 for the second) "are very neat and very fine". They are engraved by Elluin (unsigned), after Borel's drawings. Petites rousseurs; skillfully restored binding. Gay-Lemonnyer, III, 1213; Cohen-de Ricci, 735; Pia, Enfer, 1426-1427.
