BURY, Richard.
Philobiblon sive de amore librorum, et institutione bibliothecae tractatus pulcherrimus. Ex collatione cum variis manuscriptis editio iam secunda. Oxford, Joseph Barnes, 1599. In-4 (181 x 143 mm) of 4 ff.n.ch., 62 pp. (appendix); brown calf (18th century English binding). First edition printed in England of Richard's famous Philobiblon of Bury, Bishop of Durham (1333-1345). This work is considered to be the first treatise on bibliophily. Important edition given by Thomas James, professor at New College, Oxford, and librarian to Thomas Bodley. James has added at the end of the book an alphabetical index of the manuscripts held at the Bodleian Library at that time. USTC cites another edition printed by Barnes, dated 1598 (only one copy), but which does not contain this list of manuscripts. Modest binding, rubbed, spine renewed; some annotations in the text. Provenance: 17th century inscription truncated on title page - Geo. Wymberley Jones (bookplate) - Walter R. Gillette (bookplate).
