CERVANTES, Miguel de.
Galatea dividida en seys libros. Paris, Gilles Robinot, 1611. In-8 (161 x 106 mm) de 8 ff.n.ch., 475 pp. (the last mis-encrypted 47); soft vellum, manuscript title on spine (contemporary binding). First edition of Galatea printed outside the Iberian Peninsula. It is revised and corrected by César Oudin "secretary interpreter of the king", who made the first translation of Don Quijote into French. Oudin explains in his Preface to Lovers of Foreign Languages that he used the text of the edition printed in Lisbon in 1590 for this publication. "Cervantes' imagination offers us a world of ideal beauty that takes on the face of Galatea; but it is a world whose secret essence is love, a natural inclination that exalts and draws us along" (Laffont-Bompiani). Some brown notebooks, small wormholes; small lack of vellum. Provenance: Malpas Mantry (signature on title). Probably Jean Bourrelier de Malpas de Mantry. Palau, 51930; Ford, p.3.
