[Opera] - Commentariorum de bello Gallico. - De bello civili Pompeiano. - De bello Alexandrino.- De bello Africano.- De bello Hispaniensi. Venice, Aldus Manutius and Andreas Socerus, 1513. In-8 (160 x 94 mm) of 20 ff.n.ch. including the map of Europe with a double-page spread coloured at the time and 5 woods on a full page, 262 ff.ch., 2 ff.n.ch., ff.ch. 265-296; black morocco, wide gilt border, medallions on the covers, the one on the upper cover with the title, the lower cover decorated with iron 'à la fortune', spine with three ribs, embossed edges (Venetian binding of the time), modern blue morocco slipcase, spine marked 'Aldine Binding'. First Aldine edition, and the first one edited by Johannes Jucundus. It is decorated with the Aldine anchor (repeated three times) and 6 woodcuts, including the coloured double-page map of Europe, and five full-page woodcuts depicting war machines. As is always the case, two of the plates bear a handwritten legend, traditionally attributed to Aldus Manutius. Very fine copy, complete with the index, which is sometimes missing. Copies preserved in a beautiful Venetian binding of the time, richly gilt, are rare. Spine and bit partially restored; old guards renewed. Provenance: Henri Beraldi (ex-libris) - Maurice Burrus (ex-libris, and purchase label from Beraldi in 1934) - Paul Louis Weiller (ex-libris largely torn off).
