In-8 (215 x 131 mm) de 2 ff.n.ch., VIII, 279 pp.; brown half calf, smooth spine, combed paper covers (19th century binding), modern green morocco slipcase. First edition of first printing, with many passages deleted or modified in later editions. "Chateaubriand had allowed himself liberties of pen that contrasted with the spirit and tone of his other works" (Vicar). Exceptional copy It bears this autograph at the top of the title page: "Tribute of admiration to Madame Bertin, Chateaubriand. " Chateaubriand (1768-1848) was very close to the family Bertin, especially Louis François Bertin (1766-1841) and his brother Pierre Louis (1771-1841), founders of the famous Journal des Débats in which Chateaubriand had published various texts. The mailing is probably intended for the poetess Louise Bertin, daughter of Louis François Bertin. Very rubbed back, weak jaws. Other provenance: Chalvet (ex-libris).
