CLAIRIAN, L.J.
Research and medical considerations on men's clothing, especially on panties. Second edition, augmented with critical and historical notes and decorated with engravings. Paris, Imprimerie d'A. Aubry, An XI - 1803. In-8 (208 x 125 mm) de 1 f.n.ch., XIV, 92 pp., 4 engraved plates; beige cardboard with bradel, smooth spine (contemporary binding). First illustrated edition of Clairian's medical thesis. The engravings show various men's panties with details of their manufacture. The text also gives a historical overview of underwear, and is not lacking in comical details. "Many travelers claim to have noticed that people who do not wear panties have the organs of the generation more developed than those who use them: the same is said of the bakers of Paris" (p. 41). Nice copy with wide margins. Provenance: Borluut library of Noortdonck (ex-libris). Missing Quérard, Brunet, Colas, and other bibliographies consulted.
