CONDILLAC, abbé Etienne Bonnot de.
Essays on the origin of human knowledge. Amsterdam, Pierre Mortier, 1746. 2 volumes in-12 (166 x 93 mm) of XXX, 265 pp. for volume I; 2 ff.n.ch., 292 pp. for volume II; red morocco, triple gilt fillet framing, garland in corner finial, spine with ornamented ribs, roulette on cuts, inside roulette, gilt edges on marbling (contemporary binding). Original edition of Condillac's first book. The Essai sur l'origine des connaissances humaines revolutionized in its time the way the human mind was conceived and brought its author immediate fame. His work had a considerable influence and is a prefiguration of the relationships established by Wittgenstein between language, mind and thought (see: Jean Clair dir., L'Âme au corps, p. 235). Very nice copy. Provenance: A. Perreau (ex-libris and signature) - Paul Couturier de Royas (ex-libris). Tchemerzine-Scheler, II, 476.
