CORNEILLE, Pierre.
Agesilas, tragedy. In free verse rhyme. In Rouen and in Paris, Louis Billaine, 1666. In-12 (144 x 86 mm) de 2 f.n.ch., 88 pp., 2 f.n.ch. (privilege and last blank); soft calfskin, manuscript title in Italian 'commedia francese' on spine (contemporary binding). Original edition, first issue copy with the title under the correct date of 1666. Published at the time of the death of Queen Anne of Austria, the play was never as successful as expected. "The first performance had to have taken place at the Hôtel de Bourgogne, in the course of the previous month, i.e. in February. The mourning of the court hastened the abandonment of Agesilas, which has never been revived since" (Picot). Exceptional copy, well preserved in its first soft vellum binding of the time. Tchemerzine-Scheler, II, 575; Picot, 85.
