DAMVILLIERS, sieur de [pseud. de NICOLE, Pierre].
Les Imaginaires, or letters on imaginary heresy. Liège, Adolphe Beyers, 1667. 2 volumes in-12 (136 x 70 mm) of 14 ff.n.ch., 430 pp. for volume I; 495 pp. 1 white f.n.ch. for volume II; red morocco, plates decorated in the Duseuil style, spine ribbed and ornamented, roulette on the cuts, gilt edges on marbling (contemporary binding). Original edition. Pierre Nicole was, along with Antoine Arnault and Pascal, one of the main figures of the intellectual Jansenism of Port-Royal, and one of the most vigorous opponents of the Jesuits. The author composed these letters on the model of Pascal's Provincials in defense of Jansenism against the imaginary attacks of the Jesuits. "This beautiful edition belongs to the collection of the Elzeviers" (Brunet). Beautiful copy despite a small hole p. 151/152 volume I, set in red, well preserved in its beautiful red morocco binding of the time. Provenance: La Roche Lacarelle (ex-libris, library sale, lot 44 indicates a blue morocco binding by Padeloup) - J.J. De Bure (autograph note on the back cover, collated complete on December 20, 1829) - Robert Hoe (ex-libris, sale III, April 1912, lot 2399). Brunet, IV, 68; Willems, 1377.
