The Natural Son, or The Trials of Virtue. A comedy in five acts, and in prose, with the true story of the play. Amsterdam [Paris, Prault], 1757. In-8 (195 x 120 mm) of 299 pp.; calf porphyry, triple gilt fillet framing, central coat of arms of Anne Léon de Montmorency (OHR, 810), spine ribbed, red morocco title coin, boxes decorated with her coat of arms, red edges (contemporary binding). Original edition of the first play written by Diderot. First performed in 1757 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye at the home of the Duke of Ayen, it was not performed until 14 years later at the Comédie Française in 1771. This play is part of a new theatrical genre, bourgeois drama, developed in the Age of Enlightenment by Diderot, Marivaux and Beaumarchais. A fine copy with the arms of Anne-Léon II de Montmorency, Marquis de Fosseux (or Fosseuse), then Duke of Montmorency. Another provenance: La Rochefoucauld, Duke of Bisaccia (ex-libris).
