DODOENS, Rembert. Stirpium Historiae pemtades sex. Sive libri XXX. Anvers, Christophe Plantin, 1583. In-folio (352 x 218 mm) of 10 ff.n.ch., 860 pp., 14 ff.n.ch.; soft ivory wove paper, Anton Fugger's coat of arms on the top cover, smooth spine with 18th century green morocco title coin (contemporary binding). Original edition of this monumental publication, which partly reproduces articles previously published in his famous Cruydeboeck (1554). Divided into six parts, it is illustrated with more than 1300 woodcuts describing botanical specimens. "First edition of Dodoens' last and most comprehensive botanical work, incorporating material from a number of his earlier books, including the Cruydeboeck. it is of interest too, that Dodoens here made an attempt at an explanation of the parts of plants" (Hunt). important provenance This copy bears the coat of arms of Anton Fugger, probably laid down by Bishop György Lippay, who bought a large part of the Fugger library in the 17th century.
