DOLET, Etienne.
Francisci Valesii Gallorum regis fata. Related with:] Les Gestes de Francoys de Valois roy de France. First composed in Latin by Estienne Dolet: and afterwards by luy mesmes translated into the Francoyse language. Lyon, Estienne Dolet, 1539-1540. 2 works in 1 volume in-4 (215 x 15 mm) of 79 pp. for the first work; 78 pp., 1 f.n.ch. for the second work; red morocco, triple gilt fillet binding, smooth spine decorated with dotted lines, two-line long title, inside castors, gilt edges (18th century binding). Precious collection of two first editions by Étienne Dolet; the French translation is the work of Dolet himself. The conclusion of the peace with Charles V gives Dolet the pretext to give advice to François I and to retrace the king's career. Translating into French his own Latin poems, published the previous year, Dolet evokes what he has "wished to happen to the King for all the misfortunes he has suffered in any undertaking of these wars" since 1515. Adams cites only the second edition printed in 1543 of the rare French translation. A fine copy, well preserved despite a small, light-coloured spot. Provenance: Edouard Rahir (ex-libris). Copley Christie, 8 & 18; Brunet, II, 797; Gültlingen, Lyon, VIII, 7 & 15; Adams, D-766.
