First edition under this title of this book which was first published in 1753 under the title History of the Opera Theatre; it traces the history of the Academy of Music from its foundation in 1669 to the ordinances which regulate its internal functioning. It contains information on the opera house balls, biographies of librettists and composers, a staff statement as of July 1756, and other valuable details. A double catalogue (chronological and alphabetical) of the operas represented between 1645 and 1752, a very detailed index and a bibliography of works devoted to opera make this book an essential tool for research on 18th-century opera. Small brown spot at the foot of volume II; slight wear on the binding. Quérard, II, 727.
