FAYOLLE, François.
Spirit of Rivarol. Paris, impr. Perronneau at the Principaux Libraires, 1808. In-12 (154 x 89 mm) of an f.n.ch. (title), XLI, 258 pp., 1 f.n.ch. (table); rooted calf, cold-finished fillet, decorated smooth spine, marbled edges (contemporary binding). Original edition of this collection of Rivarol's maxims, published by François Fayolle and Charles-Julien Lioult de Chêndollé. This charming volume is filled with beautiful philosophical thoughts on metaphysics, morals, languages, etc., such as "Since Hobbes said that the wicked man is a great child, children must necessarily be little philosophers", or "Speech is the external thought, and thought is the internal word". There is also Rivarol's analysis of the work of Dante and Shakespeare, as well as his curious pamphlet directed against Father Delille, which depicts a cabbage in dialogue with a turnip. Rarely freckles, back slightly past, if not a fine copy. Quérard, VIII, 60.
